critical analysis (Maslow's HIERARCHY of needs)
16 year old males are usually at a critical stage in life where they are going between puberty and hardships that most teenagers go through such as:
· Relationships
· Fitting In
· School
This can affect the individual’s wellbeing in a negative or positive way.
Using Maslow’s hierarchy of needs the two profile of 16 year old males both can have their wellbeing shift in a negative or positive way.
Physical needs
Bothe the foster child and the athlete (Christian) Both have their physical needs (Food, Water, Shelter Etc.) .This helps their wellbeing in a way that they know that they are well looked after in a physical manor. This will help them to stay healthy and in a good physical environment.
Safety and security.
With this level of Maslow’s the 16 year old male who is an athlete and a Christian would have his safety and security at a much higher level than the foster child. This could be because the individual who has a safe environment they can attend to help them with their faith journey can help their individual in their wellbeing emotionally, Spiritually and socially as he feels safe and comfortable with in their church. This leads to their safety and security level is highly achieved by them.
There is a completely different story when it comes to the child in the 16 year old male who is in the foster home for he may not feel safe and secure because he has no idea when the next time he will be moving to the next family. This would cause the individual to not feel safe for he doesn’t want to get to close to everyone just in case they are ripped away from their current family.
So to compare the two in this level on the pyramid the Christain athlete 16 year old male has reached the safety and security needs more than the individual in the foster system.
Social/Belongingness
With both of the two profiles they both have reached a level of success with the safety and security on the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Both of the males could have good social skills but it all comes down to if they feel like they belong. If they don’t the level of belongingness and feeling like they don’t belong could defiantly lead to low self – esteem and low self – confidence which means that the don’t have their needs met for the belongingness.
Esteem
The esteem of the males could be low especially if their needs of belongingness are not fulfilled. It is not uncommon for a lot of teens both male and female to have low esteem. This causes the wellbeing to be affected emotionally, socially for they don’t have the esteem to feel like they are worthy and can potentially harm them for they want to have a desire to be loved, Sometimes this can be found in the wrong places.
Self – actualisation
For this level on the hierarchy of needs to be fulfilled the individuals need to be achieving to the best of their abilities and are able to cope in many different situations. To be able to problem solve without too much issue and conflict and be the best person that they can be.
In conclusion I believe that the 16 year old who is a Christian and an athlete has a better Hierarchy of need than the individual in the foster home for he could Be reaching his best potential and living to his best ability with Goals of PB’s in mind and feeling like he belongs with his groups of friends (church, Sport) compared to the individual in the foster system for he may not know when he has to move houses/ Families again so the sense of belongingness in lacking for him to reach his best potential in life.
